Is it better to drive to a BART station and take BART up, or go to a local CalTrain station and take the train?

CALTRAIN !! Your nearest BART Stations are in Fremont or Brisbane (due to piss-poor planning in the 1970's and financial wrangling in the 80's-present).

Caltrain leaves from Diridon Station, and heads right into San Francisco where you can catch MUNI to any spot in THE CITY. http://www.caltrain.com/

I ride CalTrain daily for my commute, and often for trips to the City or San Jose for events. GOOD LUCK, and thanks for using Mass Transit !!

I would take CalTrain from the Diridon Station up to San Francisco. An alternative would be to take VTA Light Rail in San Jose, get off at the end (Mountain View) and switch to CalTrain.

Here's another...take the VTA Express Bus to Fremont and ride BART up to Oakland, under the bay and into San Francisco.

An aside...when BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) was built c. 1972, it was so slow in being finished that some thought it should be called Bay Area Rapid Freight. (Think about it...)
