It's definitely an invasion of a person's privacy. That doesn't necessarily make it unethical, but it at least makes it undesirable for almost all situations.

The exception would be jobs where drug/alcohol use could jeopardized large numbers of people (such as air traffic control, etc). There would have to be a definite correlation between the person's job/safety, etc (for example, drug use by an administrative assistant in the local police department might be hypocritical, but it wouldn't jeopardize public safety).

As long as the requirement is made up front before a person decides whether or not to take the job, then safety requirements make testing an ethical decision.

Well where I work they don't really use it. They basically only test you if you are in an accident where you need to go to a hospital or if they have reason to suspect you are on drugs. If you aren't breaking the law, doing drugs, then it usually wouldn't be an invasion of privacy. Most places don't test you weekly or anything. Also you don't HAVE to take the drug test, if you really feel it is an invasion of privacy then you can simply quit.

It is entirely ethical, employment is a contract. There are terms within that contract which need to be maintained and if remaining drug free is a condition of contract you have accepted that term upon accepting employment.

Drug testing in the workplace is completely voluntary, however refusing may result in termination for a breach in your employment contract.

It is ethical. A person that is on drugs while at work is a liability for the company and for its customers.

I think it is ethical. If I owned a business, I wouldn't want people that were using drugs working for me.

I don't have a problem with it in general, and I would be especially supportive if I worked in an environment that involved heavy machinery, etc, because drugs and danger do NOT mix.

I think it's ethical. They want to ensure their employees aren't drug users. If you don't agree with it, don't work there.

I don't have a problem with it but then again I don't do drugs so I need not worry.

It is an invasion of your privacy but a company has the right to do it if they want.
