I need to change out the phone line that runs from my phone jack to the interface box outside my house. Will I get shocked doing it? I know there is no breaker to shut the line down and I think I remember that it is a non-powered line so it should be fine but I thought that I better check. Also I have to replace my thermostat in the house. That I assume is powered but I have gotten varied responses as to whether or not I need to shut down a breaker to do it and avoid getting shocked or shorting something out. Any ideas?

The phone line is only powered when there is an incoming call. Just cross your fingers that someone doesn't call while doing the work. The thermostat is not powered unless the temperature gets to a point in which the signal is sent to turn on the furnace. Turn the thermostat down low and then remove it, replace it and you should be fine.

The phone line voltage is low enough so
that you won't even feel it unless you get
a "ring" signal while you're working.
That will tingle unpleasantly, but won't
harm you, (unless you've got a cardiac pacemaker).

The thermostat is probably low voltage, but some
are line voltage. Turn off the unit at the control
switch before working on it. Even if it's low voltage,
'shorts` will send spurious control signals that your
system might be better off without.

For the thermostat you need to shut the power off to the furnace and/or air conditioner. For the phone there's not much you can do. For a step by step guide to replace your thermostat, check out www.hvac-for-beginners.com
