He did a good job with Florida and I believe he is a guy with some ability as a manager. The Yankees are a good team and I would expect he will do a good job there as well. With that being said I think he falls way short when compared to someone like Torre.

It's obvious that by choosing Girardi, that the Yankees went with experience and not popularity. Girardi was the NL's Manager of the Year and then gets fired by an organization that I feel has no clue what they are doing to begin with. And though I love and respect Don Mattingly, I have to agree with the decision that upper management has made.
However, the issue here has now become one of great impact to the Yankees organization. Torre's leaving coupled with Girardi being hired as manager will mean the loss of Don Mattingly in pinstripes on the bench.
The announcement was made this morning (10/30/07), that the Los Angeles Dodgers will most likely fire Grady Little as manager and hire not only Torre as team manager, but Mattingly will come over as Torre's assistant on the bench.
When you add A-Rod's opt out of his contract to this, along with the possibility that neither Pettitte, Clemens, Posada, and Rivera will not be in a Yanks uniform in '08, there are long-range implications that the Yankees will be rebuilding for several years again, and may drop off the radar as far as being a contender is concerned.
Just some food for thought in answer to your question.

It's the right choice in the long run as he has some managerial experience as not only was he a bench coach with the Yankees but he was also the Manager of the Florida Marlins for a year in which he won manager of the year. The only bad thing is that it means the end of Donnie Baseball as he most likely will be following Joe Torre to the Dodgers. Joe Girardi is a lot like Joe Torre in that he's a stand up guy and a pretty good manager as well.

Girardi, is a nice choice. Posada, is in a nice spot, i think he stays. The yankees, just lost 54 hr's on the right side of the plate. Jorge is a switch hitter, they lose posada they have NOTHING as far as right handed power. Mariano will be back, but no one for the 8th inning. Petitte, i may have some concerns, player option, loves torre. He just may end up in LA with Joe. which would be bad for Yanks

I guess if it was about experience, Tony Pena, who has a few years as a manager under his belt, would have been the obvious choice...
And, Jeff Luria, as much of a maroon as he is, was perfectly justified in firing Girardi...unless undermining the hierarchy of an organization, telling the boss to shut the f___ up, delving out tips to opposing players on division rivals deep in the heart of playoff chases, and overworking young pitchers to the point of potential career ending injury has become acceptable among the ranks of managers nowadays, of course.
So, it'd probably be wrong to coronate Girardi as some patron saint, because his own immaturity and ego cost him his job as Marlins manager.

Girardi is an excellent choice. The Yankees will play well for him. He knows how the game is supposed to be played.

Joe Girardi is a fine choice for managing the team. He has managerial experience, he is familiar with leading young players, he was a part of the YES network so he is familiar with how the media works and more importantly he was a member of the team for many many years. He will be fine.
