All Hallows Eve IS a real holiday in many religions. In fact, All Souls Day is still celebrated in the Catholic Church on November 1st. The most active grecognition of the 31st of October as a holiday is by Pagans who call it, most commonly, Samhain (SAH-wen). It is a celebration of death and rebirth and a time to remember and honor the dead. It is also a high powered time for work involving divination such as Tarot readings, scrying (crystal gazing), and the like. So while most people see it as an overly commercialized candy fest, it is actually a really important day to many Pagans and is even consider by some to be the Pagan New Year.

Just because it is usually celebrated at night, doesn't degrade it as a holiday. The idea that the day begins at 12 AM is relatively new. Ancient peoples believed that the day ended at sundown and the next day began at the same time. So Hallowe'en (another, more appropriate spelling for secular use), actually begins at sundown on the 31st of October and lasts until sundown on the 1st of November.

I consider it a Holiday because it's meant for kids but the adults party after. It's the second most decorated Holiday after Christmas. So why can't we get the day off?

It's just like all the originall pagan holidays, the christians changed their names and moved the dates slightly and ridiculed those who didn't ie the remaining pagans. Yule 21st December - Christmas 25th Dec Ostara Spring Equinox - Easter in spring time Halloween/Samhain - Harvest festival. It was easier to make festival dates around those already celebrated to make it easier for the conversions to remember.

Its not even considered a "real" holiday. Mail still comes, kids still go to school.
Its just a fun day for people to experience thats all.
Have Fun!
