What about The Very Hungry Caterpillar?

To every young child I've read bedtime stories, the Aesop's fable of 'The Fox and the Crow', and Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Ugly Duckling' have been a must-hear story. I feel these are very important stories to teach them at a young age not to rush to judgement about others different from them, and to learn to guard themselves against false and cheap flatteries.

The Princess and the Goblin.
It has a strong girl and a strong boy, plus some evil goblins and some good parents and a magical great-great-grandmother who lives on pigeon eggs... It makes children feel brave.

The first link is to the the tale and the second is to Aaron Shepard's website. Mr. Shepard is a godsend for teachers, librarians, storytellers and his site is full of resources.
