My impression of Cambridge is that there is a wide mix of people there. Some are arrogant, yes, but most are completely human and quite nice. I don't think you can rely on hearsay on this one. You must visit the university yourself and make your own impressions.

In the past, Cambridge did have a reputation for pompousness, and also for only admitting students of a certain sort, if you understand my meaning. They are actively seeking to encourage students of *all* backgrounds, who meet their academic requirements, to apply. While in the past, most students were of a certain class, now days, the majority of students are not from independant schools at all. So things have changed, and I think you'll see that, if you do a visit and talk to some students who go there now.

Cambridge is an excellent university. I'd hate for you not to apply there, simply because there is a reputation, based on past history, which no longer holds true today. Go, and do a visit. Speak to students on campus. See what you think, yourself.
