If your pear tree has been in the ground a while, try to make sure that you don't have grass or plants around the base. You should keep that area clear-around the canopy of the tree (that is how far your leaves and limbs come out. That's where your roots are growing. Now that fall is here make sure if it has started raining in your area that you don't have water berms built up to hold water. I spray my pears with a copper compound as well as using a Neem oil spray to keep the pests and fungus from getting started--but you do that when you know there will be no rain for at least a couple days. I usually apply it one more time about 14 days later and then I apply it one more time around Easter. Then prune off any limbs that are pointed toward the inside of the tree--these stop air and sunlight from giving full benefit of growth. I usually prune off about 1/4 of my fruit bearing limbs because it makes the tree stronger--at least that's what I believe + you get a better yield on your fruit. Good luck. Oh yes, one last thing with fall here, mulch around your tree with compost, that will add nutrients to your soil which will jumpstart growth in spring!

Water it well each week (remember it's competing with all the grass, etc. around it for water), and fertilize during the Spring/early Summer. Give it another shot of fertilizer about a month before Fall to encourage root growth.
