I have seen the plans for the reconstruction on display in New York but the last time I was there they hadn't started on any works. The area was ready for construction but there was a legal law suit in the background over who actually owns the land. I don't know the full details. The model that shows what will replace the Twin Towers and other parts of the WTC looks amazing.
edit: The remains of the victims that couldn't be identified and returned to their families will be entombed in an area with eternity pools. As one poster has just said. Nothing will ever be as famous as the Twin Towers but what they have planned will be a befitting tribute to the people that lost their lives.

hey there not rebuilding the world trade center i went up there in the beginning of 2001 and know what an amazing building it was and also the destruction it caused as i knew of the places under ie the shops and the rail links they are building a memorial to the victims on the same site which personally i dont think should ever be rebuilt on i think there are some concerns about it and what should be built but there should never be a building that high built on the ground zero spot again!!

It seems that the architects cannot reach an agreement and have turned the project into a complete exploitation of what it should have been.
In my opinion, I do not feel that the towers should be rebuilt. Respect the dead. Build a memorial and make ground zero a park where people can pay their respects and reflect on what happened.

Actually, I think they are building a memorial instead of reconstructing the towers.
