Unions are what makes the private sector jobs have to compete. They are there to help employees get fair treatment, and if they have a weak union then they have no one to blame except the members, as they control the union. Unions are still good for America as without them working conditions would crumble around us.

The UAW sold out the workers at Chrysler as the union hierarchy moved to enrich itself by acquiring the retirement funds (VEBA). The union no longer represents the workers. Here's a good story on the recent debacle at Chrysler

I think that there was a definite need for a union 120 years ago...
Today ? I'm not sure...there's a lot of other organizations that support the workforce, like OSHA. ( ACLU ?)
Is it a ''livable wage'' if no one will pay it or buy your product/service if you pay it to your workers ?

No, they hurt the American workers. I never belonged to a union and I always negotiated with my employer. The unions demands have sent American jobs overseas. The auto industry is a prime example.

Yes, but it is hard to appreciate what you have until it is taken away. Some day in the future we may all have great appreciation for what we used to have, when we had the unions.

They have done a lot of good. It's a tough call. But they do give workers a voice and that's important. It's not perfect but with a group and concerted effort, it can be improved. I fully support them.

I get paid more than union scale for my craft- because I have worked hard and built my own reputation. I work in a plant alongside union hands-- I clear more than them because i don't pay a permit fee or dues- I represent myself in all negotiations-- The only slight drawback is I pay for my own benefits--

Depends... On one hand you have unions who get liveable wages and benefits. On the other hand you have unions who raise the cost of business up so high that companies start outsourcing their work.

If I'm a marginal slacker, sure, it's good for me. I get paid the same rate as the hardest, most productive worker.
