As far as my History lessons are concerned , I remember that they told me that an Indian King loved his wife so much that he built the Taj Mahal for her as a tomb. Sorry I forgot the King's name but one of the answerers is right. She was Mumtaz Mahal.
As far as it being a shrine, I don't know about that.

Any one who knows wot Taj Mahal is - knows that it is the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal................... and to say that it is a temple - is a feat only a totally misguided, insensitive and totally pea-brained person can achieve.

Congrats - you won the cup.

I'm neither agree nor disagree. we can't change our history. but what is present we should accept it. there are theories justifying taj as a Shiva temple but non of them are appealing

Karjee, why would you ask such an insulting question. Please don't start. We have enough trouble in this world and we do not need to start another battle over silly things.
It is hard to believe that a country of shree Mohandas Gandhi would start a conflict. Try to say good thing about the other culture and they will in turn say good about ours. This is the only way to peace.

No--it is a tomb for the favorite wife of the Rajah of the time. He built it as a monument to his love for her, and rumor has it that he intended to duplicate it in black for himself, but he was deposed by his son before he was able to do so. The remains of a reflecting pool has been found across the river, though, so the rumor may be true.

Its neither a mosque nor a temple of any God, its just a tomb of a crazy king & his beloved wife. Thats all......stop spreading these rumours.
