I'm not sure...I know that rabbits as an example have fur and they can be 'skinned,' and all the fur comes off on it. This is how they (not saying its right) make fur coats. You couldn't make a hair coat, because you can't skin an animal that has hair, I think.
I know guinea pigs have hair, like humans. I suppose a horse's mane and tail is also hair, and their body covering is fur, maybe? Therefore if you skinned a horse the body would all come off ok, but the hair you'd just have to cut- sorry for the sick example, but its how I understand it!!

Fur has an undercoat different from the guard hairs. That's why goats, horses, cows and people have 'hair' and most other mammals have 'fur'.

The term fur refers to the body hair of non-human mammals also known as the pelage (like the term plumage in birds).

My sister-in-law has a dog that has "hair" (I believe it's a Bichon) and she told me the difference is that dogs with fur shed. Dogs with hair do not shed.
