I spent quite a bit of money cleaning my carpet with a private company owned by one guy. Now, the carpet is getting darker again where the high traffic areas were, and I am really dissapointed! I actually became kind of friendly with the carpet cleaning guy, helping him with creating flyers and other things to help him with his business. I want to tell him I am not happy with the carpet, but it seems difficult now that we are friends. What should I do???

NEW NANA - there is no reason to be rude unless you are desperate for attention. Why would carpet cleaning companies advertise if cleaning the carpet ultimately is unecessary because the padding makes it get dirty again? Come on! And he told me it will last until the holidays for sure, being clean and bright. We take many precautions on keeping it clean since he's done this. NO SHOES in the house, etc. 2 weeks? $200 for nothing!!!

When the carpet backing leaches into the carpet fibers, no amount of cleaning can permanently remove the stains.

I solved traffic area problems by simply removing carpet in the halls, finishing off the edges with the metal strips they make for the purpose, and finishing the underfloor with tung oil which leaves an easy-to-clean surface, or you can use polyurethane. Put a machine-washable runner or other area rug over the floor and not only does it look nicer, but it's easier to take care of.

If you can't take up the carpet (maybe your landlord won't appreciate it!) then cover high-traffic areas with machine-washable runners or rugs and tack them down with the sticky underpad they make for rug-on-rugs.

If you are not satisfied with the cleaning. Have the cleaning company come back out and do it again to your satisfaction. There's no reason to be mean/nasty. Be friendly but, firm and ask your friend to please come back over and take a look at the carpet and see what he will do. Chances are he'll re-clean the problem areas for free. I would also suggest that you buy some scotch guard and when the area(s) are dry to pretreat them yourself or cover with inexpensive washable area rugs. Or tear out the carpet and put tile/wood/laminate down to keep the carpets looking better. Good luck

First mistake was using a "small" company. If the carpet was not steam cleaned and extracted, you got a bum deal. That is caused by the detergent left in the carpet that acts as a magnet to attract the dirt. If the carpet is not properly cleaned, that's what you get. Also, if is not extracted, most spots will return after time.

This is not at all his fault. The padding under the carpet gets nasty over time and although he can take the dirt out of the carpet he can not keep it from coming back from the dirty pad. This would have happened no matter who you would have called. Do you think maybe he magically made it look good for two weeks and then put a magic carpet spell on it, or what?

Do you and your family and guests take their shoes off when they walk around the house? Do you have pets that go outside? Try taking your shoes off and cleaning off your pets' paws when they come in the door. Also putting down runners (long narrow) carpeting over the high traffic areas can help. If it was clean and it is getting dirty again then something is making it dirty and it isn't the cleaning company's fault.

I would run down to the grocery store and rent one of those "do it yourself" carpet machines. :-)
