I am having an issue with my 05 Cavalier randomly starting or stalling. I would turn over, then when shifted into gear it would die, wait about 15 seconds and then try again, and it would fire up and run with no issues. it got progressivly worse, changed the relay switch for the fuel pump, fuel filter and even the battery (that I killed on my own though). After changing the battery that seem to clear up the issue for about 4 days and it is back to the same old scenario. I can hear the fuel pump engage when I turn on the battery, but it wouldn't start now. Any ideas if it is something wrong the fule pump or fuel injectors? Also when I got the battery replace I had Autozone do there free code read and that came back with no error codes.

Intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose and thus to repair. The only way to make sure you find the root cause of these things is to diagnose the car when the fault is active. That means being ready when the fault happens. You have to do the basics first, check spark outputs and for any signs of corrosion or carbon tracking in the ignition system. Anything worn out as far as compression tests and spark plugs. You will also have to check the fuel pressure. This is not easy as you have to split the line and install a gauge to read the pressure on start and run. These need around 55 psi to be sure they are good, I believe. I would get a spec on that before saying for sure that is what you need. Also a data list to see if something is reading funny but not setting a code. Or a loss of voltage to some component. Like I said, these have to be treated with patience as the parts are very expensive.

any time the battery is disconnected or dead the computer in your car needs to relearn the idle air control. there are a few things that can cause your problem with out setting a code like a bad battery connection a small vacuum leak a dirty throttle body, bad fuel or low pressure and plugged air filter just to mention a few. it sounds like you have done all the easy stuff so I suggest that it is time to have a mechanic look at it probably the dealer because depending on the mileage the problem may be covered under the emission warranty.good luck
