Is this legal? If their "debt to society" has been paid, why should they continue to serve their punishment by being denied their 2nd Amendment right? Where does the NRA come down on this issue?

Yes, felons can be denied the ability to own or use guns.

Remember -- the 2nd Amendment only applies to FEDERAL gun control laws -- it (like the 7th) was never incorporated to apply against the states -- so the states can put in any regulations or limitations they want.

Also -- even at the federal level -- restrictions can be emplaced if they have sufficient compelling justification -- and preventing dangerous felons from having guns has been recognized by the courts are meeting that constitutional threshold.

Since the passage of the gun control act of 68, convicted felons cannot own a firearm.

This regulation has since been amended to ban convicted felons from owning any type of projectile weapon.

Non violent felons can go to court to regain their right to own a firearm.

The NRA is fine with this because they support the lawful use of firearms by upstanding law abiding citizens.

I believe that not being allowed to own a firearm is part of the debt to society they owe. I also believe they can take it to court on an individual basis and have their personal situation evaluated and ruled on.
