Merciless Gladiator is the best gear, but it takes forever to get it. (You have to win a lot and not lose.)
Pets don't really matter. You can have any pet. I would get a bat because they screech and are hard to target.

Pets are pretty much created equal, so I wouldn't worry much about that. I've seen a lot of people use bats for screech (and, I suspect, because they're obnoxious and get in your way so you can't click-target very well, lol).
Best gear would be Tier 6 raiding gear, called Gronnstalker. It's only a 5 piece set, so you could supplement the missing pieces with battleground gear - but I'm sure there's better gear to be had in some of the end game instances. If that type of gear isn't conceivable for you, maybe you could get together an arena team and try for some arena gear (merciless gladiator).
