Only last years World Series between St. Louis and Detroit drew a lower audience! My 2005 White Sox vs. Houston had more viewers than this year!!
So the question is - was it because the playoffs as a hole sucked this year - or was it because the rest of the world hates Boston since they have become the annoying brother in the world of Evil Empires??

By the numbers - it looks like people don't want to watch the Red Sox. Who can blame them.
But to address the kids:
I am not bitter - but I do hate a lot of Boston fans!
And - when Boston came to town last year, the White Sox were already out of it. I think it was awesome so many Indiana bandwagon jumpers came to the game. I sold my two $40.00 tickets for $200.00!! Thank you Northwest Indiana Boston fans!

i would probably say so, the red sox are basically a tourist attraction. There lure, is not merely there team, but anti yankee theme. The Yankees are the most hated team in sports. The Red Sox managed to get the best of them this year. in 2002 to prob mid 2003, you never saw red sox hats anywhere but new england basically. Red Sox Nation is purley a toursit show, picked up by people trying to be hip, stylish. Chicago, has some passion in there fans, in the state. They do not have the following, because they really do not have the yankees, as there big brothers.

Being a Yankees fan, I disagree with what you say that the White Sox are more popular than the Red Sox. Even though I can't stand the Red Sox (but I do respect them as being a great team) & have always been consistant in have winning seasons. What have the White Sox done lately? You say Yankee fans live in the past but isn't that what you are doing milking the 2005 World Series title? Top 3 teams with a big fan base, Yankees, Red Sox & Dodgers

The White Sox aren't even close to the popularity of the Red Sox (trust me...I am a Red Sox fan who is currently living in Chicago)...I would say it wasn't that the playoffs sucked (just look at the ALCS...that was an amazing series between the best two teams in baseball this year)...I just don't think the World Series was captivating for anyone who wasn't a fan of either team...if the Rockies had won a couple and forced it Yback to Boston then you would have seen more of an audience...but to make the assumption that the White Sox are more popular than the Red Sox is laughable...you might want to wait till the White Sox are the most popular baseball team in Chicago before you start comparing them with Boston.

Edit - Also...look at the attendance when the Red Sox came to town in August...the ballpark was almost all Red Sox fans...Farmer and Hawk commented on that point on radio and tv respectfully.

You said: "By the numbers - it looks like people don't want to watch the Red Sox."...show me those numbers...and not just the World Series ratings...how about consecutive home game sellouts...and who cares if you are out of it? You still go to the game...my first Red Sox game was one when they were in third place on the last day of the season...I went because I wanted to see my team play...you are comparing a team (the White Sox) with some of the biggest band wagon fans of any team in the league to a team (the Red Sox) with one of the largest fan bases in the MLB...again, the comparison is laughable.

The World Series numbers have been declining in general. As much as I hate to say it, controversy within the sport of baseball probably had a lot to do with the low ratings for this year. People that would normally watch the series (although not necessarily supporting a team) tuned out for other things this year.

Cleveland and Boston had some of the highest ratings so the playoffs in general were not low in the standings. I think a Chicago Cubs vs. Cleveland Indians World Series would have had the ratings go out of the roof.

I believe you are taking a quantum leap you can't support. What makes you think the higher audience in 2005 was because of the White Sox and not the Astros? There is nothing special about the support of the White Sox fans for their team, they ranked 15th in attendance this year with 2.6 million attending White Sox home games while the Red Sox drew about 3 million at home. However, it is the road games that really tell the story with the average attendance for Red Sox road games at 39k per game compared to 29k per game for the White Sox. That clearly tells me that fans, other than their own, prefer going to see the Red Sox over the White Sox.

The White Sox are definitely NOT as popular as the Red Sox. You're drawing conclusions where there's not enough information to draw one. There are 2 teams in the World Series.

There aren't a lot of Rockies fans outside of their area. Detroit and Houston are both MUCH bigger cities (and surrounding suburbs) than Denver and it's surrounding areas.

There was also the Roger Clemens angle for Houston - that alone drew fans that normally wouldn't watch the series.

The real game was the ALCS. Boston's not the team that brought the ratings down. Let's compare the NL playoff ratings to the AL playoff ratings.

If you take a look at the ratings for the ALCS, even one of their pregame shows made the Top 20. I'm a Yankee fan, but Boston was not the reason for the low ratings.

Actually Boston has become the "Evil Empire". They have pretty much purchased the Championship as the Yankees have been accused of doing for years. Matsuzaka comes to mind. His $106 million dollar purchase from Japan speaks volumes towards that. Now that Alex has become available I wouldn't put it past the Red Sox to enter the frey.
To Answer your question, I think the Playoffs this year was exciting as hell with Colorado surprising everyone. Unfortunately the AL which we both follow seemed to die once the Angel, Indians and Yankees were eliminated. Not saying that the Red Sox don't deserve the win, they earned it, but that team lacks pizzazz. Could not stand Palpepon's antics.....
