it is a 2001 saturn L300 i have been told it maybe a coil....

You said you smell gas! You may have flooded it. After it sets a while try starting it again. You can check you coil by pulling a plug wire from one of the spark plugs and putting a screw drive in the wire terminal. Have someone crank the motor and see if you can see a spark jumping from the screw driver blade something metal under the engine compartment. If you see a spark you have other problems. Check you fuse box and make sure you don't one blown.

If you heard any loud noises when it quit could be a timing belt, if it died and quietly could be ignition or fuel system problem. Spray fuel in the air filter housing, while spraying starting fuel have someone crank the car if it starts this means your fuel pump may be faulty. If still won't start check for spark at plug cables and coil

could be a lot things among them is coil correct
have to do basic trouble shoot
gas spark compression
place to start

This same thing happened to me. My car had to be towed to the dealership and I was told it was my timing belt.
