As a Brit, you are allowed to enter the US under the Visa Waiver Program which will allow you stay a maximum of 90 days (given at immigration's discretion but usually given). You are not allowed to work during this time. If you want to go on a Working Holiday, you would be better off speaking to the US Embassy. There are lots of students who do things like BUNAC who would require visas. So the US must have something like a working holiday visa.

No you can't work whilst on holiday, you can apply for a unskilled work visa for temporary seasonal work but my understanding is that the quota is already used for next year as there are only so many thousand issued.there is a 90 day limited stay if you outstay that it may be very difficult to ever return. You will need a visa waiver form that is given on the plane this is attached to your passport and when you leave the states this has to be removed at the airport as Prof you have left the country.

As a British citizen you are eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (provided you meet all the requirements). Under the VWP you are allowed to stay in the US for a period no exceeding 90 days. You are not allowed to work. If you plan on staying longer, you will have to apply for a visa. Unless you are in the US with a work visa, you are not allowed to work.

I don't think that you are legally allowed to work (it's a separate visa) The legal limit of your stay is usually 90 days but can be extended with a visa.

I'm no expert, but I don't think you can just show up and legally get a job. You would probably need some sort of work Visa.
