ive been doing a lot of research on, it but i want to make sure that i understand everythign correctly. from what ive read, statuatory rape is an adult having sex with someone who has not reached the age of consent. The age of consent in maryland is 16, so if i have a boyfriend who is 20, and i am 17, he could not get in any legal trouble, do to the fact that i am over the age of consent, and he is under 4 years older then me?

You are correct. If the age of consent is 16 and you are 17, your boyfriend is fine.

Once you have reached the age of consent, the age of your partner becomes irrelevant. If you are 17, you could have sex with a 60 year old, if you wanted to.

I dont live in MD but a friend of mine in KY was dating a girl that was 16 and he was 25. She got pregnant and her family threatened to sue him for statuatory rape if he didnt marry her and I called the cops to ask them a few questions and they told me that here it wouldnt hold up in court and if it did then he could turn around and counter sue because her parents were aware of the relationship. I think you will be fine since you both so close to age and you being so close to legal age.
