How would I "extract" this?

(r+6)^2 = 13

your best bet would be to multiply out the left side, giving r^2+12r+36=13 then solve the quadratic. you could have two roots one of which won't be shown doing it the above mentioned way.

Hi. Square root of both sides, subtract 6. You are left with the value of 'r'. (Negative times negative is positive.)
