There are the typical Madrid and Barcelona, the 2 most populated cities in Spain full of culture and wealth but if you wanted to know more of spain....

Although so many of the places in Spain are, I would say, worth the visit and you really need ample time to go to each, it does depend on what sort of visit you are after. Most cities, if not all boast many historic sites, ranging from gothic to roman ruins to prehistoric places. So I would say it really depends on what you're interested in! Here are some places I will be visiting in my next travel to spain - and for which reasons, also some general info I know:

Salamanca - great historic city with large student body makes for a nice night life, this place is considered to be one of the more 'authentic' spanish speakers, it attracts multitudes of people wanting to learn spanish and have a number of book fairs :)

Valladolid - they have an oriental musuem.. andd it was once the capital of Spain (before it was finally chosen to be Madrid) so they have a palace there with the tombs of some royals, I think (if my memory serves me right) Columbus' tomb is there too, and it was home to Cervantes too.

Santiago de compostela - is in the autonomous region of Galicia, very rural but this is the Pilgrim route, (I wont be visiting it in my upcoming travels to spain)

Santander - provincial capital of Cantabira along northern spain, not too famous for much but it is a nice northern city and if you are an archaeology affecionista you will find the prehistoric caves of altamira here!

Basque country - they have many nice places like the guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Vitoria which is the provincial capital of Basque, in Pamplona there is the San Fermin festival (running of the bulls) - with the basque though I strongly suggest you travel with caution and read your country's safety alerts as this is were ETA is very active.

There are a number of smaller cities like Zaragoza, Toledo, Cuenca, Tarragona which all have something amazing to offer. For myself especially in Tarragona they have a large number of Roman ruins, it is like a little bit of Rome in Spain!

In Andalucia there is Seville, Cordoba and Granada, all very very worth visiting! Seville for apparently having the best flamenco, in Granada this place has so much Spanish history, this was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, and in 1492 it fell and the Reconquest was complete. You can visit the Alhambra palace, and its just a great city with a bustling night life too!

There are some nice stops along the east coast of Spain, Valencia which is the 3rd most populated city has a number of places of interest such as the science and art museum, and this was the base of the America's cup in 2007, it also hosts two well known festivals: La Tomatina and Las Fallas.

This covers MOST of the places in spain, I have just given you my amateur knowledge it's better to read up on travel guides, and maybe someone else can give better info! Again it does depend on your own taste and the style of travel you would like. Bear in mind that in some places of Spain, the less touristy the place is the more you will need to have a strong command of spanish.

But before I leave I wont forget the Balearic islands! Ibiza to party but there is also the island of Mallorca (where 2 great tennis players call home! Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya), has a number of sights worth seeing, like their cathedral and palace but also their caves! Don't forget this island is gloriously relaxing, if you choose a resort in the quieter parts of the island you will find sun and water to be paradise! -- And it's not too far from the rest of the island!

Good luck with your plans! Any further questions, send me a message I will try my best to answer.

The most beautiful place, in my opinion, is the Alhambra in Granada.
