Orlando is about 50 miles away from the launch site. If you will be coming from the theme parks and tourist area (Walt Disney World, Universal, International Drive, Sea World) then it's over 60 miles away.
My favorite spot is from Jetty Park in Cocoa Beach, but you do not have a direct view of the launchpads there. Jetty Park is a good place to play on the beach before and after the launch. If you want a clear view of the launch pad, then US 1 in Titusville between SR 50 and Rt 406 (Garden St), especially Space View Park. Space View Park has live feeds from NASA during launch and sits right across the lagoon from the launch pads. You need to arrive at either of these locations very early, a couple of hours or more to find a good spot-bring a picnic.
My daughter recently watched a launch from the Bennett Causeway on the Beachline 528 (a toll road).
I most often simply stand in my front yard; not the same as being on the coast, but the view is pretty good.

Without question anywhere along US 1 in Titusville. The road runs along the Indian river with an unobstructed view of the shuttle launch pads across the water (about 12 miles) You can see the entire launch from there. By Contrast Orlando is 70 miles away. Jetty Park and Cocoa Beach are good, but you can not see the pad unless you are in a high-rise, and it is 3 or 4 miles further away than US 1 in Titusville.

We saw the shuttle launch in June 07 from Kennedy space centre. It was fantastic, not only did you get a really close view but the people who were there all added to the atmosphere. Cocoa beach or any where along the space coast would be good to see a launch. Coming from the UK it was a once in a lifetime experience, and yes it was worth it.

Drive to the coast: Satellite Beach, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island.... all are directly east of Orlando and you will see the shuttle launch from any of those towns... you'll hear it too, but after you see it go up!

not in Orlando i would suggest the beach or Merritt island.but make sure you have a lot of time on your hand because on places where you get a good view you get stuck in traffic.Kennedy space center is still the best.
