Hi Again!
Believe it or not, my sales territory is Michigan so I've been there too. While these things happen everywhere, it is not as common as you might think. General precautions should always be taken no matter where you are.
You should always be aware your environment. If it's dark and late, try to stay in more populated areas. Carry a cell phone even if it's just for emergencies. Don't appear as if you are not comfortable or don't know where you are going. If you are concerned about safety but must go out, call a taxi. If you believe somebody is following you, go directly to the nearest populated or well lit area and call the police.
Certain cities have higher crime rates like maybe Detroit, MI or Camden, NJ and some cities just have "bad parts". But many are very peaceful overall.
I know you want to move to the United States and I hope you do. Sometimes the news will sound all bad but the American Media outlet feeds on reporting the bad, rather than all the good people do.
By the way, if you are thinking about Michigan, it's a lovely state. Very mid-west country but I do not believe the job market and economy is that great and the housing market is in decline ( a lot of foreclosures on mortgages). Rentals are pretty inexpensive though.
(Oh yeah and if you think my answer is worthless, please don't feel obligated to choose it as the best just because we've had other conversations about things in the US. Sorry about your friend and his girlfriend)

Certain cities are more prone to crime than others. There are still some towns where people can leave their doors unlocked at night, where others would be better off with bars on their windows. Our legal system is really a joke. I just saw on the news this morning about a woman who was just arrested for her 8th DUI. In other countries, the punishment is more severe, so people don't commit crimes like they do here. You have kids growing up in broken homes, some turning to gangs to feel accepted. This will continue to happen until the laws change and these criminals pay a true price for the crime they commited instead of getting off because the jails are overcrowded.

The level of violent crime in America, is less than the violent crime rate in most western countries.
America is not even in the top 10 western countries, when it comes to the violent crime rate.
People assume, because the mureder rate in America is higher, that the overall violent crime rate is higher in America, thats just not true.
After Australia and England and Wales, the highest prevalence of crime was in Holland (25 percent), Sweden (25 percent) and Canada (24 percent). The United States, despite its high murder rate, was among the middle ranking countries with a 21 percent victimization rate," the London Telegraph said.

Just made me think of an old comedy movie, "The Kentucky Fried Movie."
The evil overlord is handing out punishments and orders a few prisoners to death. The last guy did something particularly bad and the leader says "Send him to Detroit!" and the prisoner is dragged off kicking and screaming: "No!!! Not Detroit!!! Anything but that!!"
(violence rates in America have everything to do with location)

I'm Brazilian and Brazil isn't that bad. You will not get beat up for no reason. It also depends on what parts your going to. The poor parts (ghetto areas) are the bad areas. But there are A LOT of beautiful places in Brazil. Many people go to Brazil and love it. Although it is true, when you go out try not to wear fancy/expensive clothes and try not to wear jewelry. If you can't speak Portuguese, try not to speak English out loud. People, not just in Brazil but also in other foreign countries, think Americans have much money. So its pretty obvious not to speak English out loud. But in all Brazil is a wonderful country. Most people there are friendly and kind. I love going to Brazil!!!! :]

That's terrible -- but it'll teach him to go to Michigan :) Just kidding.
There are bad people everywhere in the world. Please don't let those few rotten apples spoil the whole orchard. America is a great country with a lot of great people, and I hope your friend will give us a second chance -- though I understand if he doesn't. The majority of Americans are good people who don't consider random acts of violence to be acceptable behavior.

not where I live. I see kids in the summer walking all over the place after dark. Never any problems. The first murder in over ten years happened recently and it was a woman killed her husband claims years of abuse. I'm lucky, and it's why I choose to live here. Saw too much when I was in the military time to relax now.

No. But it depends on where you live. I have lived in Germany, Denmark, Scotland, England, Australia, Korea, Honduras and about 15 different states (Air Force Brat then Air Force myself). There are dangerous places all over the world and the US is no exception. In any large city there are places you should not go at night.

There are dangerous areas, yes. It is not a good idea to walk around at night in urban areas. I am sorry that that happened your friend and his girlfriend.

Not to me. I carry a gun. Any c ocks uckers who tried that on me and my girlfriend would get a bullet in their heads.
To the extent that one goes about unarmed, there is danger. since I carry a gun, I am totally safe.
The God given right to keep and bear arms is what makes for civilized society. If those little c ocksu ckers had thought that your friend had a gun, they would not have even tried it.
