There are a number of new suburbs just outside Dandenong with new houses you can buy, or a few you can rent. These would be Hallam, Narre Warren, Endeavour Hills, Berwick, Doveton, Lyndhurst or Cranbourne. It depends upon how far from Dandenong you wish to live.
There are a number of houses and flats available in Dandenong that you may buy or rent, as there are also in the surrounding areas -- Keysborough, Springvale, Noble Park, Clayton, Mulgrave, Wheelers Hill and Rowville.

All the experts are saying at the moment to buy into Dandenong, the government is apparently about to spend a whole heap of money fixing it up!! It is cheap now but wont be once all this development has been done.. Glen Waverley is an awesome place to live as well close to everything, trains buses shopping centers and only about a 10 - 20 min drive to Dandenong it is quite a nice suburb as well but is a little more expensive.. i really think dandenong is the way to go!

Good Luck

DO NOT live in Dandenong. It is not the ideal place. The Knox area is great such as Ferntree Gully, Scoresby, Knoxfield and is only about 20 min from Dandenong.
Dandenong and Doveton have a lot of crime and the people are not the best. It is a low cost living area for a reason. Try to stay further out
