just leave the money in there, just in case. After 6 months or so it is too late to collect so it will be yours.

I had this same thing happen a few years ago. I left this excess money in my checking account for 6 months , by then if they didn't figure it out I appropriated it and never looked back. I checked ,and was told 6 months is the length of time that you 're required to honor a check you wrote, that is what I did.

Is it wrong? Yep, but trying to fix it can creat more trouble than it's worth. There are checks in balances in place that will likely eventually fix the problem for you. Be sure to leave the money in the account because when it does get fixed no one will give you any warning.

Let it go - Just keep the money in your check book for a year in case they realize the mistake. My Dad once had the bank forget to pull $300 out - He waited a year then kept the money.

Trust me the bank will find out eventually. The only thing is that after 6 mos the bank cannot come back after it. But the back office will no doubt catch the error.

Eventually it will show up. Don't spend the xtra money and I would call my bank to find out why this happened. If they made this mistake who knows how many others they have made.

I don't know where you wrote the check to, but if they wrote a receipt, I would imagine that when they balnace out their end, they will find your mistake.Does that make sense? I have had it happen to me. If it is really bothering you, go tell them and be done with it.

the accounting error is likely to be spotted but this may be a legal question as in what are the banks rights here - why not ask this question to one of the legal people here in the legal section?

They will find the error, just leave the money in your account. You don't want to use the money and then be in the red.

I think you should correct it because if you don't you may swipe something or write a check for something and mistakenly forget and have an overdraft fee...and that is not fun depending on what bank you are with.
