on microsoft outlook there's an "out of office assistant" that does exactly what you're looking for. i'm sure outlook express would have something similar. do a search in the help files for "out of office" and it should be able to tell you how to do it...

I don't think it would be a good idea to tell people that you are going away and that you wont be there, for this will let people know your home will be left unattended and you could find your home might be at risk from burglary or some other form of crime, if it was an ideal world then maybe you could, but we don't live in a ideal world sadly so you have to take precautions and not say to much about it, also don't let others know how long you will be away for, another thing is if you left your computer on two things could happen, 1st is your PC might over heat and catch fire and the other is having the PC left on will leave your computer more vulnerable to hackers and viruses, be smart, think security,

YOu probably could, using rules, but then you'd have to keep your computer ON the entire time you were gone. If the system were to have a problem then emails wouldnot be sent, or returned.

Take a moment to see if your ISP has a web client in which this can be set up. This way you can turn off your computer while you are gone, and your "out of town" notices still get sent.
