I've been retired for a while now. And had a lot to do with taking care of my family. Helping my kids get settled after they moved out. And taking care of my elderly father etc. Now that everything has been taken care of, I find myself with nothing to do. Any suggestions on how I should fill my day?

Well, I am still working FT...so I can only suggest

If you have special interests or hobbies or things you once THOUGHT you might enjoy doing or learning...DO SO!...If it's a new endeavor, take a class at a local college [many are free or very low cost for seniors]..

Sports player? - golf? or some other sport you might enjoy like swimming?

Strength training - at a local gym - read just yesterday where it is the best type of exercise of seniors in that it can be moderated in difficulty; builds aging muscle; helps one to sleep better etc etc

volunteering? - doing something you love...

short travel?

Great question and many good answers. I think the key to your q. is to evaluate your life and think about what's most meaningful to do in your prime years. You have endless possibilities these days and if you try something and it doesn't fullfill, keep trying and expand your horizons. It's such a waste of life to vegetate. Be fruitful and make this the best time of your life. Sounds like you have good health so the skys the limit for you. Congratulations of retirement and I look forward to looking at more of your fine contribution to Answers.

This might be a good time to start sorting through the attic, garage and/or basement and getting rid of things you haven't seen or used in three years.

Better that you do this now than that you leave it for your relatives and friends to do after you go to that big swap meet in the sky, because they WILL be ruthless about tossing.

I know, because we went through it when my mom died. She moved almost nine rooms' worth of furniture and "stuff" into a three-room assisted living apartment. She died a week before the end of the month, and that's how long we had to sort through and get it cleared out.

Then a good soak in the tub, a good meal, a good read and lights out.

There are people in the heath care business looking for respite care workers. There aren't enough men willing to take care of elderly people. There are many caregivers who need a break desperately. My Dad for example would love to have another guy, just to talk to, maybe go out and have a cup of coffee. He could relate to another guy. He talks about WW2, and a lot of other interesting events through history. Although I can listen, it's just not the same as having someone who can add to the conversation.

I'm still working on it. It's been a year for me. I play on here because at least I can connect with other folks. It beats watching TV all day. I read a lot. I'm disabled, so I have to pace myself with physical activity. If I overdo it one day, I can't do anything the next day. I would like to get something part-time I could do on the computer, but they all seen like scams so far.

Talk to us in here ! I used to HATE computers and always said to my hubby "I will NEVER use one of those things," and guess what !!!! I spend most of my evenings on the computer and some of my day too. I also have health probs and cannot always go out and the computer can be a life-saver for me. But all the things everyone else has suggested sounds good to me. It is always difficult getting used to a new life situation. I used to HATE being at home all the time - but getting used to it now.

a hobby is my salvation. I love, love, love to read, and crochet and knit, hubby likes puttering in the yard, fixing small things and doing photos and reading.we sleep late and do errands,go to lunch, we like to picnic, I pack sandwiches and chips and fruit and drinks and we go to a park where they have horses to watch,a child's playground to watch parents and kids interact and benches and tables to eat on. when weather is good its fun,we take our books and read after eating getting fresh air and sunshine.Join a senior center, they teach everything you could ever want to learn, but we can't get up to be there that early, our day doesn't usually start till at least 1pm.they also serve lunches for a very minimal price.cards and games, sing alongs, chorus, dancing, woodworking, photography, are all either taught or they play daily,I hear people love it.

Many seniors like to talk. I talk on here alot to other seniors. You could take up fishing again, I love to fish but haven't now for several years. No one to go with. Get a good phone service and talk with old friends, they are the good ones. There are lots of tests to take and games to play on the computer. Get a pet, a cute dog, my grandson used to love taking our Wolf Hound for a walk, said he sure met lots of girls. Try going out for lunch at different places. I like to take a tub soak (happens to girls ya know) watch the animal planet channel E my kids and relatives and friends. Go for a drive in the country, harder to do all the time without someone trying to run over you. I took care of parents, was a caregiver for years so it is nice to be alone and get to choose what to do--if it is nothing, so what, are the dust police going to come for you---Nope!! ;0)
