b/c half of your class is stupid? it's not a trick question, the war of 1812 is called that b/c that is when it took place!

Can't help you with why your teacher does anything, but the USA declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812.
The causes of the war go back some time before that - American sailors had been shanghaied into British naval service; the USA accused Britain of stirring up native American tribes against them and a suspicion the Britain ws attempting to prevent American expansion.
