Good question. And one for which nobody seems to have any really good answers. It clearly has something to do with consciousness and the patterns of electrical discharge that take place in the neuro-synaptic activity of the brain. But beyond that, and a few rough models of how 'thought' encompasses memory and various kinds of 'relationships' of different characteristics and attributes of the 'things' we are thinking about, it's pretty much unknown territory.
There are even a couple of theories that have human neural cells interacting (in some way) with local quantum fields to modify or direct their activity (in some totally non-understood manner).

The mind is a gridwork of random wave patterns produced by memories and experiences that are constantly being scanned and shuffled through by a desire or impetus to fulfill a need. Occasionally these wave patterns synchronize and produce a regular pattern or wave form. These regular repeating patterns are recognized as significant by the mind and therefrom a thought is born.

Thoughts and ideas exist outside of time they are not from this world hehe they come from the cosmic universe :)))
They are in the 4th dimension and some how universally we pick up on them if we reach for them........
I think some people are truly evolved in their souls journey and they are able to have thoughts and ideas from the Divine its a beautiful and creative thing :))))special talents, gifts, imagination all created in the mind that is universal :))

Thought follows belief.
Beliefs are imprinted primarily during early development of the defensive ego identity, and subsequently control perception, thoughts, feelings and reactions.
Awareness of this body-level identity - as separate from being - allows one to 'unlearn' it as necessary and consciously master one's thoughts, ultimately achieving 'full aliveness' and purpose.

Your mind thinks in /with pictures.....an entire library of them...including from the other senses... but, it's up to us to govern these pics, and place them in a proper order, as to what we wish to think about/on...this is what is known as our "train of thought"...random thought is called "air-headedness", other thoughts are catagorized also..through this we can "see" the person...through their expression of thought, and how they communicate them..even a child...(without getting philosophocal about this ) "Peace!" :)
