One thing she may not have registered for but will need in the house is baby tylenol and mylicon drops(gas meds). Both are good to have on hand and most don't think of it until they need it and are running to the store at 3am. You can't have too much of either of these either.

It wasn't what I got that I liked that was the best gift. I had a very large shower and what I loved most was something that I didn't necessarily appreciate at the time came from a mother of 3 children that really put thought into her gift. She bought for my son 1 year old blue jeans and tops that, at the time, seemed silly since I was in the little baby mode. But, to my surprise, I had a 10 lb boy and those bigger size clothes were exactly what I needed.
The next most wonderful gifts were those of disposible diapers. You don't realize how expensive they can be until you need them over and over and over again. Packages of diapers are a godsend to a new mother.
So, larger sized clothes and disposible diapers in larger sizes, both left with the receipt so if they don't fit, were the best gifts ever.

Good Baby Shower Gifts:
--Money
--Food (gift certificates or homemade frozen meals)
--Gift Certificates
--Diapers
--Diapers
--More Diapers
--Things on the Registry
Bad (or not bad, just not as good) Baby Shower Gifts:
--Blankets (too many)
--Outfits and Shoes (too many)
--Bottles (unless registered, moms are really picky about these)
--Large items not registered for (they either already have them, or don't want them)
Just try and resist the temptation to get a bunch of outfits for the baby. EVERYONE does it, and usually mom is given a plethora of hand-me-downs (that were worn once) from a friend or sister anyway.
There is nothing sadder than going through Junior's dresser and finding a brand new outfit with the tags on it that he has already outgrown.
And shoes?? Do infants really need shoes???

What I WISH I would have gotten that you can't register for is a few gift certificates for restaurants or pizza places. After bringing home a baby it is CRAZY for the first few days (or weeks if the mother has a C-section) and cooking isn't something I wanted to do at all!!
Diapers are always good to give...just make sure you include a receipt in case the baby ends up using a different kind. Pampers Swaddlers were the best for my son, I would buy those if you buy diapers.

Here are some things that would be awesome, and that I've given or gotten:
-Gift Certificates for local restaurants (for after baby is born so nobody has to cook)
-Diapers
-Grocery Store gift certificates
-Cleaning service for one month (it's usually fairly reasonable in price to have someone who will come vaccuum, do dishes, and help with laundry a couple times a month)
-Diapers (be careful, however, a lot of people will toss one pack of diapers in with their gift, but then the new mom is stuck with 100 packs of size one. maybe try size 2 or 3 or something as well)
-Manicure/Pedicure gift certificates
-Spa day (she can use it during the last couple weeks of her pregnancy to help her relax and prepare for baby)
-Anything on baby registry (it's frustrating to take the time to fill one out then have everyone completely disregard what you *want* and get you what they feel like)
Just some thoughts :)

Two things I just saw on a baby fashion show on TV that I think would be good for mom and baby are 1. A 'baby sling carrier, this one kind you can carry baby on your front, back, or on your side. The mom's loved it because they could do work but keep their babies close. 2. They make these awesome diaper bags both designer and off the rack that look like purses or just cute bags, but have lots of room, pockets, zipper pockets, everything. I would love one so after the baby I'd have some glamorous.
You can find them on yahoo search at diaper bags.

Well, I can't speak for experience so far. I haven't had a baby shower yet or a baby. But I think I would love a pretty little baby outfit that has lace and stuff it's a girl or a little suit if it's a boy.

My favorite gift , which now I give to everyone else is something differnt but everyone esle loves to. I by a nice clothes basket to match the nursery and fill it with things the mother probably has not bought or most people have like, Baby detergent DREFT small baby hanger to match room color. (plus all the clothes she gets she can proptmly wash and have ready to use. Meds: Infant Tylenol, Little Tummies anti gas, teething Tablets, Cottton Balls alchol for belly button cleaning, and anything else off the registry stuff inside. And dependong on how well you know the Mommy a something extra for her a little like travel bag of goodies for the hospital, chapstick, gum, crossword puzzle etc, address book so she can make a list of people to call, Breast Pads most 1st time moms don't realize they will need them.

I'm a very practical shopper and buy what is needed more than what is wanted. I would go through the register and pick something that is definitely needed, depending on what you can afford..... baby can't come home without a car seat. baby must have a crib, crib sheets, blankets. one piece sleepers are the greatest and so are onsies.....they have short sleeve and long sleeve too..... I've just become a grandma for the first time and my daughter-in-law has a pack and play which is awesome.... it's set up downstairs (live in a 2 story townhouse) and it has a small changing table and the mattress raises for newborns... it's awesome and we couldn't live without it..... the dog loves it too because she can see baby through the mess and check on him whenever she wants. have fun and save receipts...even with the registries my daughter-in-law got lots of duplicates....have fun....

I would say get something off the registry and try to resist getting too many little extras off of it. Because of her work circumstances my wife ended up having three(!) baby showers. We ended up having way too many receiving blankets, burp cloths, and washcloths. I would avoid any little dresses; cute but not practical. One thing that they may not have registered for but may like is a swaddling blanket with velcro straps. We weren't aware of these before our daughter arrived and found it very useful.
