the sound effects were soooo creepy! her appearance and basically the whole satan thing. i was raised catholic and therefore taught about heaven and hell. at the same time i was told that monsters are not real. so most horror movies do not scare me, but anything about satan freaks me out!

Really it was the build up to the whole thing that freaked me out. It was more about the idea that someone could become possessed and have their entire being changed without any control over it.

The photography in the movie and the lighting really conveyed an air of hopelessness and that alone set the mood that made all of the rest of it that much more oppressive.

The scariest thing was the build up to the special effects and that soundtrack has to be one of the most eerie ever created. Tubular Bells from Michael Oldfield will always be associated with The Exorcist. I bet he never thought it would be the theme to one of the scariest movies out there when he made it.

The fact that this kind of thing potentially happens to people around the world! I mean think about it: You're just hangin' out, watchin' tv. All of a sudden you just start freakin' out and you can't control yourself! Screw that! It wasn't nessecarily the way she (Linda Blair) looked in the movie, or the things and voices she did, it was the clear fact that this stuff actually happens in real life!

The deleted spider walk scene that they put back in later.

But most of all the fact that it is a kid, and just how good Linda Blair is in the role.

The voice...by far the voice.

Closely followed by the flashes of Captain Howdy.

Actually, the only parts that spooked me were the parts where the priest (Damien) keeps seeing his dead mother. One is a dream sequence where he's trying to reach her and she goes down into the subway, and another is where he hallucinates that she's sitting on Regan's bed. That was just creepy to me.
