I am a young professional with a 10 year old son. We are interested in living in downtown Cleveland. We love to watch the Cavs, Indians, and Browns and really want to be in the middle of all the excitement. I am curious if there are any children living downtown. I would send him to a private school, so the public school system will not be an issue for us. Someone answered a previous question of mine and blatantly stated that kids don't live downtown. Is this true?

I've known persons with kids in Ohio Village, but not downtown. Personally, I wouldn't recommend Ohio Village.

When I worked downtown, many of the professionals with kids lived in suburbs like Fairview Park, Westlake, North Olmsted, etc., some in Shaker Hts. (which I think has changed somewhat), some in Lake County, etc.

If you want to live very close to downtown, my hunch is that you would be happier in Lakewood than downtown, and you might feel sufficiently comfortable with the public schools that you could save a bundle of money. You certainly would be closer to better parochial schools, including St. Ed's. St. Ignatius on the near west side also would be convenient.

Lakewood would offer a short commute to downtown. It's very kid friendly and has well-established cultural institutions:

Lakewood may actually be the center of excitement for a 10-year-old, especially with downtown so nearby.

Have you considered Crocker Park in Westlake? I'm not certain it's a fit, but it would be fun checking it out:

If you want to be near Hawken, Gilmour, or University School, you could check out Beachwood. You could live within a short walk of a rapid station on the east side of Shaker Hts., or drive to a station.

BOL!!!

I think it was me that said "kids don't live downtown." I guess I was a little too general in my statement. Of course, some kids do live downtown, but not too many. And most of them are "forced" to live down there due to economic situations. If you can afford private school and sports tickets ($) then downtown is not the family environment you are looking for. You will not be in the middle of it all down there. People drive in for the game and drive out right after. Only twenty-somethings stay downtown to drink after games.

You are in the middle of it more in the neighborhoods outside of Cleveland (or Westpark area still in Cleveland but the west side). I do not know of anyone who would want to live downtown with a kid. No one and I've lived in Cleveland for 40+ years.

Yeah, I know some people who lived downtown and had kids. That is so crazy for someone to say that not one child lives in downtown Cleveland!
