If you have the cd that came with your computer (your XP cd), you can throw that in there and re-copy all of the files needed for your computer to function.
If you don't have the exact type of operating system that came with your computer, you will have to either take your chances or install it on a seperate partition of the hard drive.

The COA or key that came with your computer will only work for the version of Xp that you had on the machine. It will not work to install an upgrade like XpPro from Home or XpMedia from Pro.
You may be able to get it to load, but it will not activate automatically and when you go to Microsoft to activate the software over the phone, they will know you have the wrong system version, from the key you give them.
IF you have the restore CD's, or if there is a restore partition on your hard drive, that is the best route to go, rather than trying to format the drive and install everything yourself. The factory restore program will use a disk image to over write the existing programing and restore it to the factory default. If you have not made backups of your files, they will all be lost.
You may want to take this opportunity to upgrade, you could install a second hard drive, and restore the system to that drive, and then leave the original drive in as a file server. You would pull all of the files that are still good off of the old drive, and then reformat. This will clean out anything that is corrupted or any infeections that might be on the drive.

Not sure what you question actually is. If it is a hard drive failure and you replaced the hard drive the WinXP CD is all you need to reload the operating system. If you have a complete set of restore CDs - use those as that will put all the drivers and programs back as well.

If you're going to reinstall windows, you just need the windows cd, it doesn't have to be the same one that came with the computer, but you will need the serial key, that's usually printed on a sticker on the computer.

You can install any, but now's your chance to get Linux. Ubuntu is a free operating system, with free software. Google it to find out how to have it shipped to you for free as well.
