The British Isles are a part of the European continent, so the islands themselves are European. The peoples who originally settled the British Isles, the Angles, the Saxons, the Celts, etc., all came from mainland Europe, so they, too are European.

We've been a member of what has come to be known as the European union since 1973 (against the wishes of the French). We were always part of the European sub-continent so technically - always European

Geographically and maybe politically, yes. But Brits still distinguish between Europe (the continental mainland) and the British Isles. The mainland is usually referred to as 'the continent'.

There is also disagreement as to what constitutes the real Europe. Many do not consider 'eastern Europe' to be genuinely part of Europe.

I think you have a valid question. Just as Egypt seems like more a part of the middle East rather than Africa, England is often thought of of being separate from Europe. It's political alignment with North America through history only propagates the notion. England was settled by peoples from Europe and despite the separate language is very much a part of Europe.

What planet are YOU on? The British Isles are part of Europe. I'm absolutely amazed you didn't know that.
