2 answers

5x + 16 - x = - 68

Collect like terms

4x + 16 = - 68

Transpiose 16

4x + 16 - 16 = - 68 - 16

Collect like terms

4x = - 84

Divide both sides of the equation by 4

4x / 4 = - 84 / 4

x = - 84/4

x = - 21

Substitute the x value into the equation

- - - - - - -

Check

5x + 16 - x = - 68

5(- 21) + 16 - (- 21) = - 68

- 105 + 16 + 21 = - 68

Collect like terms

- 105 + 37 = - 68

- 68 = - 68

The variable x = - 21 is a solution for the equation

I'm not sure of your question. Was a value given for the variable? This equation is solved this way:
5x + 16 - x = -68
5x - x + 16 = -68
4x + 16 = -68
4x = -68 - 16
4x = -84
x = -84/4
x = -21
If -21 was given as the value for x, then yes it is a solution. If any other value was given, then no, it is not a solution.
