Hi, a friend of mine has a tropical setup and is wanting to get a nicer cabinet to go with his 60 x 18h x 15w tank. He likes the look of the Juwel Rio 400 cabinet in dark wood and was wondering if this would be ok with his tank?

The rio cabinet is 20 inches wide and the tank 15" . The tank would be at the front of the cabinet so therefore would not be resting on the rear panel of the cabinet as the tank is 5inches less wide. Can anyone see any problems with this? Thanks for any replies.

It could be done as Juwel cabinets are effectively backless.

I Have three myself & have just had a look - the four upright cupboard sides support the top.with just a back board in the centre section to brace the stand so supporting the tank isn't a problem.

If he has an existing stand you can get Fablon that is a close match to the Juwel dark wood.

If I understand your question you are asking if the back panel of the cabinet is required to support the weight of the smaller tank. I'm not familiar with the particular cabinet, but in many cases those things are designed for a very specific shape of tank. Look at the way the top surface is attached to the back panel, think about a worst case scenario,if the parts of the cabinet would support the tank with no fasteners to hold it together (in other words direct support for the tank),like a stack of bricks, sort of, then using the larger cabinet should be OK. If there is a question in your mind, then perhaps another cabinet, that fits the tank more suitably would be in order.
The water in a tank this size will weigh almost 600 pounds, not counting the tank or any of the other paraphernalia that goes with it.
Caution is advised.

Look further for a cabinet of the proper dimensions. I don't know Juwel though call them and see if they make a cabinet that fits your friends dimensions. All-Glass is a major aquarium manufacturer with a web site that has dimensions of their cabinets and most aquarium stores carry their products. Look around and I'm sure your friend can find an acceptable cabinet that will fit his aquarium size. You could also hire someone to build it or build it yourself. I have several homemade cabinets and they are superior to the one's I have that were store bought. By the way I didn't build these I personally just don't have that skill level with wood.

Whatever you do, don't buy a cabinet that doesn't support the entire outer rim of the aquarium. You're just asking for trouble.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

I even have a rio 240 marine and definite you like the froth bass without it whether you have a tiny stone below it is going to shatter the glass to not point out the timber will rot whilst it condensates

Uh, yeah, I can't see anything but problems. No part of the tank should ever be unsupported. Water is VERY heavy, and the decorations (like gravel and rock) are even heavier. By leaving it partially hanging, you are just inviting cracks, shatters, water damage, and dead fish. Just get a stand built for that size tank. Email me if you have any questions.
