I pierced my first ear when I was 17 and it hurt so much I didn't get the second one done for about 10 or so years. I was really happy to finally have one hole in each ear but then they closed up. I asked my Doctor to do it but he said to go to a ear piercing place as he knows how scared I am of needles and I'm going to take up a lot of his time as he'll have to chase me around his office like he has to do when I get my annual flu shot :-( I then pierced it myself by shoving the earring through the hole and it bled a lot-my Doctor thinks I'm nuts as he thinks that must have hurt more. The problem is -it was never pierced STRAIGHT -it was pierced badly-at an angle so this is why I have always had problems putting in the earrings. Three of my four kids have piercings -even multiple piercings and I have become the 'Family joke' -how can I muster up the courage to pierce my ears and more importantly-how can I make sure it doesn't hurt-can I take tylenol or advil or aspirin?

ok WOW!! heres the thing, 1. yo udomn't have to have your ears peirced to wear earings, theyv got those magentic ones and clip ons are coming back in style. 2. I think it's how your thinking of it that is one of the problems, I think you know this is a mental thing rather then a physical fear as all fears are. Stop thinking of it as a needle, b/c it actually isn't (go to claires!!) what it is is an earing that they put into a gun and then put the earing on your ear. the end stop thinking of a huge needle going into your ear b/c thats not happening!! in fact stop thinking of it at all. Now yes there is going to be a little bit of anxiety, do this. Take a friend, support is neccessary, take 2 advil/tylenol about 25 mintues before hand, take a bottle of water. Drink the water liberally 30 mintes before going, set down, don't look at the person doing the pericing, talk with your friend, let them do one ear. Take a second, drink some water, calm yoruself do the second. After a total of less then 10 minutes this will be over and you wont ever have to do this again! follow the doctors orders and clean it well and you'll never have to do it a gain

As they say in Latin America... the donkey feels fear for a reason. Meaning that while on the trail something is spooking the donkey it is for some very important reason.
Your body is a sacred place where only you have control and your instincts naturally perk up over any kind of perpetration done against its body. And just like the flu shot you need to take and probably do... An ear piercing isn't that important for the physical integraty of your body. If you let the fear dominate you wont be the worse off for wear but you also wont have a hole in your earlobe and wont be able to wear those type of earrings.

Have you ever been pinched? Stung by a bee? Its like that. Its instant and over in a second. Its one second out of your life.

You can't stand pain for one second? Your giving it much more weight mentally then it deserves. Your obsessing is only going to make it worse. You should either just do it or resolve to wear earrings for unpierced ears.

Have a friend pinch you really hard or slap you right before you get pierced, the pain receptors will go to that place and if it happens at the same time you won't feel the pierce. You can also bring some ice cubes and freeze your ear lobe before they do it- that will help to numb the area.

Go to a place that does earpiercings (a good place), and take a bag of ice along. Hold this against your earlobe until it is numb, and then let them pierce it.

Why bother? If you're afraid, why do you think you have to get it done?
There's no law that says everyone has to have pierced ears.

Just go do it! The only thing to fear is fear itself!
