My neighbors across the hall had bed bugs and I saw them dragging out their mattress to be thrown away because the bed bugs had colonized inside the mattress. How do I prevent them from getting inside my mattress or box spring?? My mattress cost me about $1,500 and I really don't want to face the thought of disposing it.

Keep the whole room clean. Vacuum not only around and under the bed, but also baseboards, closets, regularly clean drawers, etc. Here's a website:

If you have that much invested..Pick up a mattress cover(zip on bag) . The better ones(super high thread count) keep everything out of the mattress including dust mites.

I have kept bed bugs at bay from infesting my mattress by purchasing a high quality bed bug cover and box spring cover. Prices on these items vary, but the best price and best source I found is www.bedbugcover.com - very quick delivery and the product is extremely comfortable, did not notice the difference of having it on my mattress or not! Good luck!

Vacuum it often! There is even a special spray that you can buy...not sure of the name...that will help keep them at bay. Not sure but the Febreze that helps kill allergens may help to be a preventative!
