Why is it alright to separate children by gender (all girls school/all boys school) and religion (catholic school) and sexual preference (in New York we have a High school for gay and lesbian kids) but not by race.
I am not suggesting we have all black, white or Asian schools but if we did what would the difference be?
People I know who send their kid to an all girls school say its because the girls are more comfortable and less distracted.....Well one could argue that being with people of their own race makes them more comfortable and less distracted..Any thoughts?

I am not suggesting we separate schools by race.I am asking why is it ok to separate by sex, religion and sexual orientation because we do and it is acceptable. I would not send my kid to an all girls school much less a all black school

i went to a conference about this. the women wont like this, but it would be a benefit if boys and girls would be taught separately. the short version: we are wired differently. therefore we learn differently. it was facinating. teachers could learn to teach especially to boys orgirls. it would be such a benefit to all.
about your question......races, religions and sexual habits are not reasons to separate children. all girls of those backgrounds learn the same and all boys of those backgrounds learn the same. gender is the only reason for segregation.
i hope your last comment wasn't directed at me. if it was, you may've missed my point

I actually think separating schools by sex has a lot of advantages. I did really well throughout school, but I know I would have done better if there were no girls there. Lets face it, as much as we'd like attractive people of the opposite sex around because its fun, it will always be a distraction. I went to school with some smart guys who never lived up to their potential because they couldn't stop chasing you know what.
As far as separating by religion, I could see how parents would want their child to go to a school that not only educates, but enforces the values and beliefs of their faith, I don't see anything wrong with that. And the kid can decide if they want to maintain that faith after they graduate.
But separating by sexual orientation---WTF, are you serious, is there really schools like this? Most kids probably aren't even sure of their orientation.

This is always a vexed question and on the whole I think the answer is that if do better separated they should be so, but I do not think this should be a case of always. As an only child I personally would have benefited from a mixed school or at least some mixed lessons but this at the time was not an option

I think this is backward thinking. To separate kids by race would be moving back about 50 years in the stand for equality. Think about this, no one argues that having a school for their race is going to help their kids do better in school because we know it's a lie. Kids are separated by gender in some schools because it helps them focus on school and not on who's cute. Catholics have private schools so that they can teach kids their values at school as well as give them a private education. The sexual preference high school I'm sure is to give gay and lesbian kids a safe and encouraging environment instead of sending them to the wolves that an ordinary high school would be for them. These separations all have a specific purpose. Your argument is faulty, if people aren't comfortable with people of other races it's their problem that they are racist and they are not going to adjust well anyway it sounds like.

It's not ok to seperate. It's not right. That is still racism and discrimination. Seperating children makes them feel that they are different from the others(religion, sexual preference and race mostly) and may sometimes lead them to the wrong conclusion that they are superior or inferior to other people. Seperating is wrong in any way that you do it because we are all the same, We may have different beliefs, sexual preferences, genders, skin colours and whatever else, but we all have dreams and hopes and needs.
Seperating is just plain wrong.
Even though there is some benefit in seperating girls from boys...

Yeah, we can do that. When we're finished, we can go spit on the graves of all of the people who fought and died to give YOU the right to equal opportunity and education. That is what the difference would be. People, blk and wht lost their lives to integrate schools. They lost their loved ones, they were beaten, they lost their livlihoods, they had to flee their homes to avoid persecution. That's the difference.
Moving onto the question: I don't think public dollars should be spent for seperate schools based on gender or orientation. Actually, I don't think public schools should exist. They're just giant day care center full of people who don't want to be there and incompetent baffoons reading from an outdated, oversimplified textbook. Maybe if education wasn't free people would take it more seriously and see it as the privilege that it is.

I am against public education in general, but I do not think it should separate due to race. Read twentieth-century American history if you want to find out why.
A public school for homosexuals is a VERY bad idea. I don't really care if a private school does it, because the rest of us would not have to pay for that filth.
Gender separation is a good idea. It would leave the students way less distracted. It would also alleviate the problems that come with dating while in school; far fewer teen pregnancies, fewer fights, fewer diseases, you name it. I wish I went to a boy's only school.

No as it teaches people to be separatists and develops discrimination towards other groups ,people learn that we are all different and accept others opinions and ideas if they are exposed to all the different cultures, colour, religions, life styles in mix schools.
Diversity creates understanding and tolerance of others
Eg. if a Asian kid only attends a school only for Asians ,how can he learn what others are like and so a racist is in the making

What would the difference be? You'd never learn any "diversity" or understanding of other races. I came from an all white school so I spent the rest of my life trying to figure out what other people were thinking and why they did what they did.

Then you still don't know what is education, how will they understand each other better? So you mean even where they are going to work should be the same thing or what? Different people means different ideas and opinions.
