I would tell you to count to 10 except that rarely ever works unless you've made a conscious decision to not allow anything to upset.

However, I would advise that you remind yourself of the consequences of a tantrum; it benefits neither yourself nor your 'opponent'. The gratification of a punch to the face last only a few seconds or for as long as it takes reality to set in.

Reality in your case would be detention.

The next time some one insults you, smile at them and walk away. This would have a puzzling effect on them and they won't know how to react to the situation. This will ultimately leaving them feeling like the smaller person.

Count to 10. No, it's not easy to just do this automatically. You do need to make a conscience effort to do this. Practice it in everyday life... everytime you answer or react always count to 5 or 10 to learn to slow down and process the information and make a better decision.
Realize that by punching him you are satisfying him. You just let him know he got to you. You need to learn to control yourself and realize he is not making you mad. You are making yourself mad.

Most importantly, look at what you are getting from this situation- detention? I doubt that's worth it.

Whenever you feel that you are angry, you keep a cube of sugar in your mouth (refrain from dissolving in your saliva) and at the same time wash your ankles and nose with water at a temperature not exceeding 17 degree centigrade. The result will be dramatic. The whole world will start loving you.

Just walk away, tell a teacher about them. I hate most of the people at my school, but I'm coping ok.

The only time when it's ok to punch is when they threaten you physically or they do actually hit you.
