I have a small pond in my garden with a few fish in it (and a couple of bloomin' big frogs) and now the weather is getting colder, I know I shouldn't feed my fish until the water is about 10 degrees. BUT... I have a few strands of blanket weed in the pond. Nothing too invasive. Should I remove it or leave it for the fish to eat to keep them going? My pump is now switched off too. I've been scooping the dead leaves and berries off as much as I can. What should I do?

seems like you are doing fine.

Fish can cope with a wide range of conditions so don't worry about the odd leaf decaying and sinking.

Thin out the weed now. Fish cannot digest at low tempertures so they will not eat it anyway - even idf they are starving.

Fish cannot digest food when the water temp falls below 50 degrees F so I would not feed them. If the pond is outside then I doubt they will starve anyway. Hope your pond is deep enough for your frost line otherwise your fish will be fishsickles. The fish need at least a foot of unfrozen water to live in over the winter. In a small pond always get rid of the debris and any live plant should not hurt anything.

We have our pump on all year round despite what the "experts" say. My husband has just drained our pond today infact and is cleaning it out ready to be refilled for the winter. We do feed them less obviously but we keep the pump going otherwise it is likely to freeze up in the winter.

You can feed goldfish wheatgerm food if the water temperature is between 4 deg C and 10 deg C. Below 4 deg C stop feeding them.

I'd leave it. The fish can munch on it and it will die once the water cools down enough. Keep up with the leaves, letting them build up can drastically increase the nitrogen level in the water and kill your fish.

Get rid of the blanket weed. The fish will not eat it and by next year it will get bigger and possibly take over your pond.

Don't wait get rid of it now.
