I HAVE tangled with the tax man. I think they just make stuff up as they go along.

Just remember one thing about the IRS they don't make tax law, they are merely responsible for collecting income tax. The IRS operates under the assumption that they are correct and you are wrong.

If you take a certain tax position and the IRS doesn't agree with you, then they'll deny your interpretation and issue a correction in their favor.

But it doesn't have to stop there. If you believe your interpretation of the tax law is correct, you have the option of appealing the IRS descision, and even going to tax court to plead your case to a judge.

So you don't have to get screwed by the IRS, just make sure you have good people repesenting you and giving you solid tax advice.

Oh, groan...been there done that, threw out the Tshirt!

Actually been audited TWICE! Not a fun process. But I did get an apology the second time around...seems they had erroneous information about my supposed income.

This is so bloody TRUE! I got audited last year for 2003 taxes - I made an honest mistake (and so did my tax man) but with the Govt. (IRS) you are guilty until proven guilty!
