A customer buys something for a consumer to use

They may have been looking for something specific to the interview, but, generally, a consumer is anyone that consumes product. A customer is someone who is buying something from you to consume.

Customer is a sub-group of consumer.

I worked at a call centre earlier this year and their interpretation of the two are...

Consumers are the people who use the service, in this case being the telephone directory.

Customers are those who advertise their business in said directory.

I think it depends on the individual interpretation, whether it be a company or person, as Customer can also be described as a Consumer.

customer is : a person who purchases goods or services from another; buyer; patron.

a consumer is: a person who uses goods or services

so a customer is not necessarily the consumer. becasue some one can be a customer but be a reseller. so they can buy a product and sell it to someone else. for example a shop owner is a customer to the manufacturer or distributor who sells the particular product, but then the shop owners customer will buy the product at the shop for personal use, so he is the consumer.

make sense?

Hard to answer, but here goes:

A consumer is one who purchases goods. A customer only exists in relation to a specific vendor. For example, a customer of Sears.

Customer = someone to whom you are selling a product or service

Consumer = someone who buys and uses the products and services you provide, although non necessarily a customer (i.e. they maybe buy them from someone else). "Consumers" often just refers to the general public...
