oh wow i love this previous answer. As a direct tv installer we have done many hd off air antennas......best bet would be to get a powered hd antenna go to yahoo and search for locations on where to point the thing, your going to need a compass of course, install the thing in a attic, on the roof, or on the side of your home, run one single coax to either a.) a cable tv splitter or b) the off air antenna port on your reciever any more questions contact me thanks

Your one-line question is a bit lacking, so lets be clear on 2 points:

1 - Do you in fact have a HDTV? (I am shocked at how many people think they can take the old family TV and convert it to HD with a box or an antenna).

2 - Do you in fact have a HD receiver from DirectTV? (Many people buy HDTV's and are shocked that they have to upgrade something).

If the answer is "Yes" to both of these, read on:

First: go to AntennaWeb and type in your address. It will show you a street map of your house and where the various HD broadcasters are in your area.

It will also tell you if you need a outside or inside antenna and about how big.

Once you get a HDTV antenna (like the Phillips Silver Sensor indoor antenna for $30):

On the DirectTV reciever, there should be a screw-type "F" connector on the back of the box labeled something like "Ant-IN". You attach the antenna here with ordinary CATV coax. RG6 or RG59 works equally well.

Third: You have to go into the setup menu on the Direct TV box and tell it to scan for available channels.

This third part is sometimes tricky. You may have to play with the position of the antenna, or turn it and re-scan to get better signal strength.

Hi,

Of course you can. I don't know the Direct TV box hookups in the back. If you don't see a coaxial connection then, you will need an RF converter you can then hook it up with component cables. You're HD box by Direct TV has a converter in it to upconvert signals to HD. I don't know if this also works for off air channels, but there is also a set top box which does this can can be connected to your Direct TV with a HDMI cable or you can hook the set top box up to the TV directly.

You can definitely hook up a hoff air antenna directly into your HD TV, because there is a coaxial connection on most HD TV's.

Can't be done. HD is digital, an antenna is analog. There is no way you can squeeze a digital signal into any antenna, well at least not be true digital HD.
