My son is currently in his second year of teaching and is preparing to pursue his degree in school administration. He has all level certification. However he has two young girls and I know assistant principals are overworked. Does anyone know if there is a notible difference the after hours spend by an elementary principal, middle school or secondary. I know there are a lot of games with secondary. Anyways any suggestions would be helpful.

I am a retired educator who thought I knew what principals did. Not until my son became an elementary school principal did I realize ALL the duties of an educational leader. He averages 9 hours a day. Elementary schools have extra-curr icular activities too. I think a bigger factor in the amount of time spent is the size of the school. For example, a smaller school has a more demanding division of labor than a larger one. I mean, there are fewer people to do the same job required in a large school and so a principal (and delegates) spend more time because the few have to do everything.

I am a retired elem teacher and my opinion would be that elem would be a better fit. The secondary principals are often times tied up in all the extra curricular activities and have odd hours. But no one in education has much extra time, i was a single parent divorced, elem school teacher and the stresss level at any public school is horrendous. I would really suggest something else, I lost me health and everything to dedicating my life to teaching and most people who go into that field are dedicated and love children so it poses a real issue with trying to be a good parent and a good public teacher/principal. Also administrators don't get the summer off if you live where they still have the SEpt - June issue, so there goes family time . I think the pay increase is not worth to going up to principal, these are all just opinions from experience, things to consider.
