The Earth's Children series by Jean Auel is a good one. It's about people living in the ice age and it has a lot on how the different social groups work. It's pretty interesting and the main characters are written really well. There are some very graphic romance scenes though, but it's easy to skip over them if you're not into that sorta thing. ;)

Look for a trilogy called "The Christ Clone Trilogy"...it has some family life...some drama...and lots of excitement.

try george r.r. martin's series. the 1st book is called ' a game of thrones'. it has elements of fantasy in it, but is mainly about family and politics, set in something resembling the dark ages.
sorry, that's about all i can suggest. if you want anything fantasy-related though....
