if I buy, say for example, Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router, Access Point, Firewall and 4-Port 10/100 Switch, and I want to create a wireless network, could I do that with this and not have to use a PC, like I do for my router? Like hook the modem directly to this, and have access to the network, without using a PC. I am getting 2 laptops, and i want to be able to have a network, without having to use my PC, or hook it up to the laptops. is this what this equipment is for?

Assuming you have an active network connection (either direct LAN on a college campus or cable or DSL modem at home), you can plug the router into the network connection, and your laptops can use the router to share the network connection. You WILL need to connect a PC via a wire at some point in order to configure the router. You can use one of the laptops with a wired connection for this. Once the configuration is done, you won't need to do it again unless the router has a problem (which can happen more or less frequently depending on the router).

You will have some setup disks with your router and from your service provider. These will have a 'wizard' for how to set up a network directly through the router rather than through a desktop PC. Not sure why you need a switch though, these would be of use if you have a cable system? Use the wireless h/w and s/w on the laptops to connect to the Linksys. I think you should check a few details with the store you are buying from and draw a picture of how you want it to work. you might be getting things you don't need

Also, you can use the Windows software in the Control Panel for setting up each PC.

The router itself will have a name and you will need the WEP/WKP key, which will be generated when you go through the Wizard.

Like you say this is pretty simple.
THe Link Sys you mention is used like this.
You connect the Router to your Internet Service Providers Modem using an ethernet cable, to the WAN Port on the Router.
This automaticly makes the Router active and can be used to connect either Hard Wired using ethernet cables or wireless.
So this makes you your own network you can connect to it or not it is your choice. This piece of hardware simply affords you the option to connect multiple computers at one time using the ports on the router or wireless, all at the same time.
I am a little confused by your statement can I have access to the network without the PC
Yes as soon as you connect the Router to the Modem it creates the network. Next it is your option if you want to connect to it or not.'

well i own that model...so u need the internet connection that comes in the form of a Ethernet cable...u have a port near the swith market INTERNET....the u would have to connect to the router and configure it's local LAN...default ip for the router is :"192.168.0.1" and leave the user name blank and type only the password "admin" whe u try to log on for the first time. After setting the router u and your other laptops can access the internet via wireless or wired switch.....also u can share files between your laptops because your computers will be in the same LAN.

Just going to let you know that I would not get the WRT54G. We owned one for about six months, and it would freeze up and we would have to reboot it at least 3 times a week. And I think you would have to do some minor configuration of the new router, It depends on your internet provider and internet router.

Well, I'm using one, no computers are directly connected to it all are using wireless and I have four laptop users.

Most routers do not require a computer to be connected, they work by themselves connected to the modem.
You will have to "wire" to it to configure it but that is only one time. You do that from a web browser window.. There is a CD which you can use to do that with but I never use it.

Okay yeah, just plug your router into the phone line and make sure it is set up correctly. If both laptops can connect to the Wireless Network Connection....they can potentially share files.

To share files, you need to make sure they are part of the same workgroup. Right click My Computer, Properties, then go to Computer Name and then Network ID and change the Workgroup name to anything you want...as long as you make sure all computers you want networked up are named the same.

Finally, to see each others files, go to network connections and view all networked computers.

Voila!

with the wireless router, you won't need the switch, unless it is part of the router, lol. but for initial setup of the router, you may need to physically connect one of the laptops to the router to configure security, access lists, etc.

safety: A under pressure connection gives you a greater maintain connection considering information isn't being transmitted for the duration of the air. WiFi has encryption, yet that encryption could be actual cracked for the tech savy/ desperate intruder. in spite of the certainty that that's amazingly no longer likely for this to take place, that's available. Reliability: A under pressure connection gives you a greater good connection the place WiFi is susceptable to interferance and random sign loss. velocity: maximum WiFi connections have slower community speeds than under pressure. B is 11Mbps, G is 54Mbps mutually as ethernet is 100Mbps. instantaneous N and upcoming WiFi gives you quickly connections, that could actual be trumped via a Gibabit under pressure connection at 1000Mpbs. under pressure is plenty greater suited for best-bandwidth needs (like streaming video and on-line interest play).

i have the same router and i recommend it. it's easier to hardwire the pc or one of the laptops for the initial setup but after that you can be completely wireless.
