There is a difference between Traditional Karate and Kempo/Kenpo Karate. In Kempo/Kenpo there are some Kung-Fu and Jujitsu moves incorporated into their forms.

The Kempo/Kenpo schools moves utilize the 5 Animals (Snake, Crane, Tiger, Dragon, Leopard) in some of their advanced ranks (Tiger Raker is the 1st @ Blue Belt).

In Kempo/Kenpo, grappling is also taught, so jointlocks and armbars become part of a student's repetoire.

I'm pretty sure that Kenpo Karate is just the same as other forms of Karate, with some modern evolution.
Shuri-Te Karate was based on Naihanchi Kata.
It then went to Hawaii with Okinawan Immigrants.
Ed Parker learned it there, and most "Kenpo Karate" schools still use Naihanchi as their Base.
Ed Parker developed off of his "Karate" trainng, and some additional training in Kung Fu, a series of self-defense charts.

Kenpo is what karate used to be called.

ALL the Okinawan Masters... (by the way, Okinawa is the birthplace of karate, not Japan) called what they learned and taught Kenpo... Ryukyu Kenpo. It just means "fist method", as the Chinese say "Chuan Fa"... same word.

American Kenpo is the result of the adaptation of the term "kenpo" and some people say "kempo".

Toudi-Jutsu was "kenpo". If an Okinawan Arts Practitioner wanted to call his art Kenpo, he would be in the right, as it applies, as long as he is not doing the watered down Japanese karate. Be upset if you want but Japanese karate IS watered down.

Shotokan AND TKD are both from the Shuri-Te styles. What Guchin Tominakoshi(Funakoshi) and Kenwa Mabuni taught was much less than what they learned.

The Okinawans would not teach the Japanese their complete art. This is why the stances and hand placement of all the Japanese and TKD forms is different from the Shorin Ryu Kata they originated from.

Kenpo is totally different than traditional karate.
Traditional karate comes from Okinawa. It is old as dirt and has been used in actual combat. It is a complete system that teaches a person how to survive.
Kenpo karate was invented by an American and is usually taught in a mall near you. It is not old, it is not traditional and it has never been proven in combat. Also, Kenpo Karate named Elvis a black belt after one weekend of training.

There is a Chinese Martial art called Kempo or Kenpo, this is a real martial art and should not be confused with American/Ed Parker Kenpo.

It actually depends on the style of kenpo and the style of karate. They are similar though, even though not truly the same.
