My dog was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a notorious neighbourhood dog who was running loose - is there any product(s) legal in the UK that I could carry during walks to prevent a repeat occurance (this dog is meant to be kept tied up but the owners ignore all instructions to do so) luckily my dogs injuries are not as bad as they could have been due to her heavy coat offering protection, she sustained several scratches and two bad heamotomas (blood blisters) above her hips that will cause her pain for around 2 weeks until they clear had she fought back or been a short coated breed her injuries would have been far more serious possibly life threatening.

I now feel that it would be wise for me to carry a deterrant when our walks resume as the owners do not and will not tether the dog (or build a fence).

Any help or suggestions please.

Hi ... after reading some of the stories about dog attacks, gotta say that I am pretty nervous about being in the same situation.

Can you not report the owners of this dog? If it is a vicious dog, being allowed to roam the streets, he is a threat and a nuisance .... plus I'm sure they won't have any liability insurance for it?! You could try an ultrasonic transducer, a citronella spray/pepper spray or a whistle to startle the dog.

Citronella spray. It is humane...it doesn't hurt the dog, but something about the scent of it confuses the dog for a minute and snaps their focus away.

In addition, call and report any loose dogs you see roaming around. Better to stop the problem before it starts, right?

Yes buy a air horn made to train dogs , and or even a water spray or a can of compressed air all will do the trick and providing they are only used for the dog training here they are ;legal, one you use them against a human they will become an illegal weapon and you will be prosecuted.

you can get pet correction sprays that give off a loud sound, pets at home sell them.
also i have seen on ebay electronic dog deterants. its a hand held device that will emit a high pitched noise. (it says that it was desined to keep away aggressive dogs from joggers)

both of these are humane as they will cause no harm to the dog and are both on sale hear in the uk.

also i would think about raporting the dog.
